My sweet grandmother is riding over today for a visit… My uncle is bringing her and they are leaving shortly to head over. This woman is the true Southern Matriarch of the family and is the epitome of Southern grace and charm. She seriously never leaves the house without being dressed to the nines, dripping in jewelry, her hair and nails perfect, and red lipstick on… She is six feet tall (well, used to be) and has the most perfect posture I have ever seen. She also speaks with that classic Suthun acc-ient, dahlin’.
She is failing fast, though, and is undergoing a wide array of tests… She either has dementia or Alzheimer’s, we aren’t sure… But, hopefully, we will get some answers next week when my mom and uncle meet with her doctors. It’s really sad to see this lady that was the president, treasurer and leader of every group in town get lost in her own home… Or the proud, independent woman have to give up driving and take to sitting in her recliner all day long staring out the window… Or for the once wonderful cook to almost burn her house down repeatedly because she forgets that there is stuff on the stove… Even when the house fills with smoke. It’s really sad.
Anyway, Mema is coming! I have to go get my house Mema Ready. I’ll be back today with some sweet and funny stories, I’m sure… Like her losing the fried chicken we were about to eat… And, finding it later in the dirty clothes hamper. Or her insisting to help me fold some laundry and never finding a whole load of the Mister’s socks ever again… (Three different times, this has happened… No damn clue where the hell they are…)
So, I better run and tidy up, make some sweet tea, and run to the store to get the stuff for pimento cheese sandwiches for lunch… I’m so excited!
